Did you know that butterflies have what's called compound eyes? The compound eye of an insect is made up of thousands of individual photoreceptors. Each of these receptors effectively has its own cornea and lens, but still operates as part of a single eye. Has your snake ever had any visual issues during or following a shed? Above are two snakes who just finished a shed. The lower one, as you can see, has a clear and healthy eye. The upper one has what looks to be a wrinkly film covering the eye. This is known as a retained spectacle and can happen following a shed, making it difficult for the snake to see properly. As owners, you can help avoid this by making sure your snake has the appropriate enclosure humidity to have a complete shed. Sometimes, you can give extra help by giving them a bath!

An indolent ulcer arises when the outer epithelial layer of the cornea migrates over the defect, but is incapable of adhering to the underlying stromal layer. This results in a chronic ulcer with waxing and waning symptoms. Treatment involves mechanical debridement to help create proper adhesion of the tissue. 👈 Swipe left to check out all the loose epithelial tissue seen at the initial exam and Tank’s eye 2 weeks after treatment! 👁️

🐾🐶❤️ Meet Miya! This sweet girl was seen for a red left eye. After a thorough eye exam, our suspicions were confirmed: Miya is dealing with a retinal detachment. 🚨👁️

This was diagnosed with an ocular ultrasound. When the retina detaches, it can rupture some blood vessels causing bleeding. ❤️

The opaque blood makes it hard for us to evaluate the structures inside the eye. The ultrasound helps us to "see" through the blood to the back of the eye. That seagull-like shape the blue arrows are pointing to is the detached retina. 🕊️🪶

Some causes of retinal detachment include blunt trauma, infectious disease, and high blood pressure, among others. 🩺👩‍⚕️

Although the retina is very unlikely to reattach on its own, Miya is being treated medically and she is comfortable! She is continuing to be closely monitored. 👀

💪🏼✨ In the meantime, keep sending those positive vibes Miya's way, and let's show her all the support as she embarks on her road to recovery! 🌟🐾

Say hello to a fascinating phenomenon: Iridal Cysts!

During embryonic development, sometimes tissues do not quite close up properly. This leaves behind these little blips of tissue that fill with fluid, becoming cysts. These cysts are often attached to the back of the iris and are not so obvious because they are hidden. In some cases, the cysts are not attached to anything and they float to the front of the eye where they are easy to see! 👁️💡

Symptoms? You guessed it! 👀 Look out for those charming brown circular structures, either sitting in one spot or doing a little dance around your pet's eye as they move their head. 😄 While they might look quirky, they're usually harmless and do not affect vision unless there are too many or they grow in size.👓

Arcus lipoides is characterized by lipid (fat) deposits in the corneal tissue. This condition can affect one or both eyes. It may stem from high blood fat levels, diabetes, Cushing's disease, thyroid issues, or other metabolic disorders. 👀

🐶Symptoms often include a cloudy white to sparkly spot, semi-circle, or ring in the cornea. It can sometimes go unnoticed until it is larger. Blood vessels may be present in the cornea, as lipid delivery into the corneal tissue occurs via the bloodstream. ❤️

🔍 While it has a striking appearance, this condition is non-painful and typically does not impair vision. However, it can provoke inflammation, which should be managed to prevent eye discomfort or irritation. ✨

🐾👁️ Anterior Lens Luxation 🐕✨

Let's talk about a critical eye condition: anterior lens luxation. 🚨 This painful condition often arises from a genetic mutation in the gene ADAMTS17, especially in Terrier breeds. This results in weakening of the fibers that normally secure the lens. 🧬🐶

However, it's not just genetics at play; degenerative changes or blunt force trauma can also compromise these fibers and lead to a free-floating lens within the eye. 😟 When the lens becomes displaced through the pupillary opening into the front chamber of the eye, it's not just uncomfortable—it's excruciatingly painful. 😣

What are the warning signs? 🚦 Severe squinting, sensitivity around the eye, a hazy cornea appearance, a visible lens outline in the front chamber, and increased redness around the eye. It's a distressing situation for our furry friends. 🐾❤️

But, that's not all. The displaced lens can obstruct fluid outflow, causing elevated eye pressure—another source of agony that could lead to blindness. 🌑⚠️

Why the urgency? 🚑 Anterior lens luxations are ocular emergencies. In some cases with early intervention, non-surgical repositioning of the lens to the back of the eye is successful. In most cases, surgical removal of the lens is crucial to keeping the eye comfortable and visual. In cases where the eye is both blind and painful, surgical removal of the entire eye may be necessary for the patient's well-being. 🏥✨

Let's talk about a critical eye condition: anterior lens luxation. 🚨 This painful condition often arises from a genetic mutation in the gene ADAMTS17, especially in Terrier breeds. This results in weakening of the fibers that normally secure the lens. 🧬🐶

However, it's not just genetics at play; degenerative changes or blunt force trauma can also compromise these fibers and lead to a free-floating lens within the eye. 😟 When the lens becomes displaced through the pupillary opening into the front chamber of the eye, it's not just uncomfortable—it's excruciatingly painful. 😣

What are the warning signs? 🚦 Severe squinting, sensitivity around the eye, a hazy cornea appearance, a visible lens outline in the front chamber, and increased redness around the eye. It's a distressing situation for our furry friends. 🐾❤️

But, that's not all. The displaced lens can obstruct fluid outflow, causing elevated eye pressure—another source of agony that could lead to blindness. 🌑⚠️

Why the urgency? 🚑 Anterior lens luxations are ocular emergencies. In some cases with early intervention, non-surgical repositioning of the lens to the back of the eye is successful. In most cases, surgical removal of the lens is crucial to keeping the eye comfortable and visual. In cases where the eye is both blind and painful, surgical removal of the entire eye may be necessary for the patient's well-being. 🏥✨

While any breed can be affected, some are more prone. Breeds like Basset Hounds, American Cocker Spaniels, Akitas, Flat-Coated Retrievers, Siberian Huskies, and Chow Chows are commonly affected.

Glaucoma feels like a really bad migraine headache. This can cause your pet to be quieter, less playful and they may even lose their appetite.

In the first stage of treatment, glaucoma medications are prescribed. If the eye still has elevated pressure, but maintains visual function, relief and preservation of vision can be achieved through laser procedures or the implantation of a glaucoma drainage device. These interventions help regulate eye pressure and keep it within a normal range.

The optic nerve and retina succumb to damage over time, which leads to blindness. Most eyes are irreversibly blind with an elevation in pressure of as little as 36 hours duration.

Eventually, all glaucoma medications fail. This means that end-stage procedures, such as a ciliary body ablation or surgical removal of the eye (enucleation) may be recommended if eye pressure cannot be controlled.

We have a heartwarming story to share with you! This little rescue kitten came to us with a unique condition – an encircling third eyelid and symblepharon. 🐱

👁️ What is an Encircling Third Eyelid & Symblepharon?
An encircling third eyelid is a condition where the third eyelid continues around the periphery of the eye instead of only being present at the inner corner of the eyes. A large portion of the third eyelid was covering this kitten's eyes, which was obstructing his vision.

Symblepharon occurs when the conjunctival tissue (pink tissue around the eyes) adheres to the cornea. This adhesion also contributed to loss of this kitten's eyesight.

✨ Restoration of Vision:
Thanks to the incredible dedication of @catsofsaltspring and the care provided by our team, this sweet kitten recently underwent a successful surgery to remove the adhered conjunctival tissue and to address his elongated third eyelids, giving him a chance to see the world with clarity and wonder again! 🌈

🎉 Road to Recovery:
We are thrilled to report that Basil is recovering remarkably well. His eyes are healing beautifully, and they are filled with an ever-growing sense of curiosity and joy. 💕

My journey in the world of veterinary medicine kicked off with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of Alberta in 2010, followed by a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Calgary in 2014.

Since then, I've been dedicated to refining my skills and expertise. I honed my talents through a small animal rotating internship at VCA Western Veterinary Specialist and Emergency Centre in Calgary, Alberta, in 2015.

However, my calling led me to pursue training in ophthalmology and I embarked on a journey to Michigan State University in 2016. There, I completed a specialty internship followed by a combined four-year Master of Science and Comparative Veterinary Ophthalmology residency.

During this intensive period, I was fortunate to train in all facets of eye care, from the surgical to medical management of ocular conditions in a wide range of animals, including small animals, horses, rabbits, birds, and even exotic species.

I'm here to provide individualized treatment plans, including managing conditions like glaucoma, corneal injuries or disease and cataracts.

But there's more to me than my love for animals and veterinary medicine. Outside of my professional life, I've had the privilege of representing Canada on the international stage as a member of the National Canadian Taekwondo Team. I'm also a trained ballet dancer and an accomplished pianist, which gives me a unique perspective on the importance of precision and artistry - this is useful for microsurgery 🙌

When I'm not caring for the vision of our beloved animal friends you'll find me embracing the breathtaking outdoors that Vancouver Island has to offer.
